Variants and packaging at a glance
A variant is a product in its own right, attached to a parent record that carries the name and the axes (size, colour…). Packaging describes how the product comes in packs: GSE-Web always converts to units, so stock stays counted by the unit.
- The parent carries no stock: movements, lots and orders are recorded on the variants.
- Variants are generated in one go from the axes; running the generation again with one more value only creates the new combinations.
- Each variant inherits the parent's record (category, unit, VAT, current prices), then lives its own life: price, barcode, stock and movements.
- A product carries named packagings (carton, pallet, bag, blister…), with a purchase PCB and an outgoing pack: the quantity is always expressed in base units.
- Supplier order lines and movement-order lines are entered in packs; the pack used is frozen on the line, so editing the catalogue never rewrites a past order.
A catalogue that follows the reality of packs and sizes
No record per size to maintain by hand, no carton maths to redo at every order.
One record, several sizes
Size and colour are added as axes: the record stays single, the variants are created in one go.
Each variant has its own stock
Own reference, barcode, price and movements: you scan the right size and see the right stock.
Order by pack
The product's PCB, or a supplier's own, suggests quantities in whole packs; a quantity that is not a multiple still goes through, and is flagged.
Count without calculating
Receive "3 cartons": GSE-Web records 36 units. Stock stays counted by the unit, everywhere.
From catalogue to receipt, in four moves
Axes first, packs next.
Set the axes
On the parent product record: for example Size and Colour.
Generate the variants
Every combination is created, with reference, name and price inherited; running it again creates no duplicate.
Describe the packagings
Carton of 12, pallet of 480: one purchase PCB and one outgoing pack per product, plus a PCB of its own for each supplier if needed.
Order and receive in packs
Order and movement-order lines are entered in packs; the server works out the units, stock stays in units.
From pack to unit: an example
The quantity is always stored in base units; packaging is there to enter and display in packs.
Mineral water 50 cl
Supplier order line
A supplier can have its own PCB (24 instead of 12). Automatic replenishment between warehouses can also round up to whole packs.

Frequently asked questions
Is a variant a real product?
Yes: it has its own reference, barcode, price, stock and movements, and is scanned like any product. Only the parent product carries no stock.
What happens if I add a size later?
Run the generation again with the new value: only the missing combinations are created, existing ones do not move.
Is stock counted in cartons?
No: the quantity is always stored in base units. Packaging is for entering and displaying in packs; the server does the conversion.
Can the PCB differ from one supplier to another?
Yes: the purchase packaging is set product by product and supplier by supplier; with no setting, the product's PCB applies.
